- HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Begun June 17,
1985 in Butte, Montana, and still going strong with two of the
original partners at the helm, Uptown Café is "arguably
Montana's finest dining room" and is as interesting as the
mining town this sophisticated little culinary Mecca calls home.
Creativity, on many levels, lies at the base of the success of
the Uptown Café. "I looked around
and decided this town needed an alternative type restaurant,"
said Barb Kornet, former systems analyst. "We have wonderful
steak houses here but nothing different." Guy Graham, a
former chef at the prestigious Pittsburgh restaurant Common
Plea, known for his innovative creations like a chocolate
omelet and strawberries and green peppers over ice cream, and
Kornet, Butte-lover and enthusiastic taste-tester, are proud
to be part of the Uptown Café.

Owners, Uptown Cafe
"The Uptown" is known for providing more than just
a meal; they provide a memorable dining experience. The walls
display artwork from regional artists. The simple but elegant
decor and lighting sets the mood for delicious dining. And the
aroma! And the food!
"We delighted in the grandmotherly sausage onion
soup, turkey Devonshire with a zesty twice-baked potato casserole,
and desserts such as dropdead delicious chocolate rum pound cake,
creamy Bavarian apple tart, and an intensley fresh black raspberry
pie. It is easy to understand why, even in the winter when it's
fifty below zero, customers sometimes drive from Red Lodge (227
miles - no big deal in Montana) for these extraordinary meals."
J. & M. Stern, Gourmet Magazine
The collaboration has been a great success. The Uptown
Café has received national press in such prestigious
magazines as "Gourmet" and "New York Times Magazine".
In 1993 the U.S. Small Business Administration named Uptown
Café the "Main Street Business of the Year
for Montana."
Located in the historic district of uptown Butte, Montana,
the Uptown Café lies in the shadows of
the Finlen Hotel, Butte's tallest building at 10 stories. The
"Mining City's" rich history provides an ideal setting
for the contemporary elegance of the Uptown Café.
